Lessons From the Dominican Republic:
Raising the Next Generation

Read Judges 21:25 and Isaiah 3:5.

Modern culture has become oriented around the individual as king, diminishing the importance of community, of family, and of government. Consider the beauty of the sanctuary called home, where we find nourishment for our bodies and our souls, where we find rest, where we find peace and enjoyment. What is the benefit to children to cultivate in them a heart for the Lord, a heart for each other in the family, and a heart for the home?

Read I Thessalonians 2:7-11.

Consider that you honor God when you put others first. A signature trait of a mother is gentleness. A father works to support his family, and he must live so as to be a good example to his children. Parents also have a responsibility to teach them. The goal is to show your children that they are important, to express love to them. Consider that the opposite of love is selfishness. At times of fatigue, or boredom, or despair, how do you show your children love and grace that offers hope and a way to move forward? Are you able to put others first, no matter what state you're in?

Read Exodus 20:16.

This, the ninth commandment, not only covers bearing false witness verbally, but also bearing false witness about one's relationship with God by displaying a bad example of conduct, all the while claiming to be Christian. To be a bad witness in ignorance or weakness is one thing, but to know better and deliberately mislead is another matter altogether. Discuss the responsibility you have to your children to practice righteous living. Consider that, by doing so, you will be helping them comply with the fifth commandment (Exodus 20:12).

Read Proverbs 14:4.

A mother asked her young children what they wanted for dinner. They had bacon strips, grilled cheese and red grapes. We live in a "Have it your way" society, a society, which proclaims "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". The reality is that anything worth having comes with a cost attached. If you want an ox to plow your field, you must feed it and be willing to clean the stable, in order to reap the benefits of the harvest. Apply this Proverb to child rearing.

It is important to teach children to think right thoughts about God, to give them spiritual confidence and to shepherd their souls. For example, here are some suggested questions for you to think about first, then to ask your children (you might want to get out your Concordance) - What do you think Heaven is like? How is Jesus both God and man? What does the Bible say about angels? Will Jesus come back to Earth?
