Read Genesis 18:1-8.
Abraham is the first person shown in the Bible opening the door of his home in hospitality to others. Who do you think were his guests? Food and eating is the focal point of Abraham's hospitality. We often feel that we cannot spare the time to provide such hospitality, but consider and discuss what important and sometimes life-changing events have occurred at such gatherings.
Read Proverbs 22:6.
Students appreciate meekness in a teacher, just as customers appreciate a non-threatening, non-pushy sales representative. People do not naturally like to be "taught" or "sold" on anything. Through a meek spirit, a teacher can inspire and facilitate the human natural desire to learn by engaging the student's internal motivation. Discuss the traits and techniques of some of the effective spiritual teachers you have sat under.
Read Proverbs 23: 29-35, Galatians 5:13 and I Corinthians 8:9.
Alcoholism has been categorized as a disease, a lack of self-control, a sin, a bad habit, among other labels. Is alcohol drinking permissible for a Christian? How about for the pastor or an elder, considering that they are charged to teach (I Timothy 3:2)?
Violence may be defined as being emotionally agitated to the point of loss of self-control. Read Micah 2:2. The name for this sin is materialism, and it is committed by people who are covetous and obsessed with acquiring more and more wealth and material things. Parents rob their children of time and companionship by working several jobs to make more money to buy more 'fun'. Discuss a time when you fell victim to the violence of covetousness.
Read I Corinthians 12:28.
The success or failure of an enterprise rises or falls with leadership, whether it be a family or a local church. Even though the church is a living organism, it must be organized or it will die. The Holy Spirit imparts the gift of leadership. Leadership is a vital component of the spiritual organization of the local church.
Discuss the spiritual organization of the church you attend and how you are impacted by that.
Read Psalm 51:12 and I Timothy 6:17.
If wealth makes a person proud, then he understands neither himself, nor his wealth. The possessing of material wealth ought to humble a person, and cause him to glorify God and not himself. Consider the joy of your salvation and how richly God gives you all things to enjoy. How wealthy do you feel now?
