Fall: September - November 2019
Classes begin promptly at 10:30 following the fellowship time.
Buddy Spaulding is teaching a class
"Binding the Wounds: Reconciling Theology and Science for the Evangelical"
You're going to get to: 1) draw pictures; 2) participate in my first screenplay (I intend to keep my day job); and 3) consider your opinions on several questions (by questionnaire) at the beginning and at the end of the class (it will be interesting to see what changes in perspective occur).
This class is about exploring the relationship between the Bible and science. The focus will be mostly on the Bible and theology in the first part of the class. We'll be looking at some of the fears evangelicals face when contemplating science (I'll ask you for a list). We'll consider how both scientists and evangelicals can conflate philosophical/theological beliefs with actual science. We'll look at the various "lenses" we use as we read the Bible and consider scientific matters. We'll spend time discussing the Galileo Affair of the 1600s and the origins of the modern conflict we see in the American church today. A framework for reading the Bible well while giving science an appropriate place will be discussed.
In the later part of the class we will look at the way scientific terms are used by scientists - as opposed to popular usage. We'll discuss how the scientific method works, and especially the ways it works to reduce bias. We'll consider some current and future events that will likely require a sound application of science to alleviate human suffering and promote well-being.
This is not a class on "creation vs. evolution" and should not be thought of as such. There are reasons to discuss this topic besides that ongoing controversy, some Biblical and some intellectual and aesthestic.
My hope is that this is a fun, interesting, and productive time, and that our lives are enriched, both in our Bible study and in our appreciation of the world we have been blessed to live in. Soli deo gloria! (For the glory of God alone!)
